Fasting is one of Islam’s five pillars.  As  someone who grew up in an Islamic household, it’s nothing more than an annual routine to me, but for others, the ritual could be difficult to understand, and may seem mysterious or even weird.

Eating Not Eating documents my daily life during Ramadan in the format of a table. Over the course of thirty days, I meticulously detailed the times of my fast, noting what I ate and what I did throughout the day, and recorded the pages of the Quran I read, and the Tawarih prayers I had done.

This table, organized and on display to the public, subverts my ordinary activity into an anomaly, in turn transforming what the spectators thought of as an anomaly into the most ordinary activity —— one of eating and not eating. The routine within the work aims to reveal the ways in which many  anomalies are just normalities we have yet to try to understand.

In addition to the installation, there are two video works that recorded my performance of fasting and breaking the fast.

This project was commissioned by Bridge Hole by OFF-SITE, a big shout out to them for having me and showing support.
