EINDHOVEN MOSQUES

Mosques in Eindhoven are built in various sizes and layouts, feature different amenities, and each attended by a unique ethnic demographic. Anas Chao visited five of the city’s mosques, and made rugs that visually interpret the mosques’ architectural elements and social contexts. The rugs are made with patterns that are individually rotated to align with the direction of qibla—the specific direction towards Mecca which Muslims face to perform daily prayers. The variety of mosques' styles and contexts not only reflects the diversity of Eindhoven, but also highlights the plurality embedded within the oneness of Islam.
